At Principia CrossFit, we are more than just a gym; we are a community of everyday individuals looking to better themselves, and cheer each other on in the process. We all come together for different reasons, whether that is to loose weight, gain some muscle, get better at sports, or feel more confident in our own skin. Ultimately though, we all just want to live happier, healthier lives.
Regardless of why we are here, we all stay for the same reasons: the confidence we gain through CrossFit, the belonging we feel in our community, and the improvements we see in ourselves daily.
To start, my name is Amanda Thurber. Before Crossfit, I had never done any exercising. I would do something at home for about a month and lose all motivation and drive. This was pattern in my life for at least ten years. I just happened to fall into Crossfit after starting a search for some kind of program outside of the house in February of 2016. I found something but it was only 2-3 days a week and more often than not I wouldn’t go. I looked into something else close to home and one day went for a free class. Little did I know that I was about to change my life and my husbands.
In September of 2016 my husband and I started Crossfit. I often said that I was unwilling to give up pizza, beer, nachos, and wings for the gym and my attendance was pretty rocky for the first couple months. In January of 2017 I stated limiting how much beer I had to only on the weekends and dedicated myself to going at least 3 days a week consistently. Within three weeks I saw huge changes in how I felt and looked.
September of 2017 marked my one year anniversary of gym life and it has been one the best things in my life. My husband and I found it strengthened our relationship, we have more energy to play with our daughter, and our health has all around improved. For me personally it has significantly helped decrease my depression and anxiety. Winter is the toughest season for me and this was the first one in a long time where I haven’t even really had much trouble depression.
Principa isn’t just a gym, it’s a place to come together and encourage and help one another. We help each other fight through our doubts and our struggles. This is a true Crossfit family.
My advice for newcomers would be don’t be scared. I had people tell me not to try Crossfit, that it would be too hard for me or that if I did it I might become to muscular. I ignored every nay sayers and this is where I have become more self confident. I show myself time again and again what I can do. Its not always an easy day at the gym, but it’s always worth it.
My name is Jonathan Sorenson, I currently serve as a member of the Idaho Army National Guard, as well as a Deputy for Ada County. Before CrossFit I would either accomplish a workout through the military or wander aimlessly around the gym. Maybe a mile or so on the treadmill or a few minutes on whatever machine looked cool. My weight continued to climb and I was more out of shape than ever before. I was then turned onto a CrossFit app that was in development called Full Throttle. This was my first real exposure to CrossFit. It posted a workout and I would go to a globo-gym and try to accomplish the workout. I had no idea what I was doing and would often use youtube to try to learn the movements. I loved the workouts, however I was still not seeing a change. Shortly after the introduction to Full Throttle I received a request from a local CrossFit box to present the colors as a member of the Ada County Sheriff’s Honor Guard at their annual Murph. Ultimately we were unable to fulfill that mission, however they extended an invitation to come workout. I had to look up what the Murph was and was instantly motivated. With virtually no experience I showed up in my soft body armor to complete the workout. During that workout I don’t know if I even did any of the movements to standard, however I completed it and was forever hooked! A few months later I did a week trial and knew that if I committed to the journey I would see the results I was looking for. I then signed up and have been going consistently (4-5 times a week).
I have seen my weight drop close to 40-50 pounds. I can now do pull ups, cleans, and squats without even thinking about it! For the first time in my life I can look in the mirror and be proud of what I see. I left my original box in search of a smaller more intimate box. I found Principia through a friend and instantly knew that Mitch was the right person to continue the evolution and progression. Mitch and Principia has laid a phenomenal foundation for me and motivated me to begin to learn how to coach others. Through Mitch’s guidance and mentorship I will receive my Lvl 1 certification in Mid Jan 2018. I am so excited for the next part of my CrossFit journey!
If I were to be able to encourage a new athlete, my advice would be simple. Show up, don’t quit, and listen to your coach. In this sport you need to always be learning, but the hardest part is just getting to the gym. If you show up to Principia, the coaching staff will not let you quit, they will not let you learn nothing, and they will always challenge you. From there on out the results you want will come and you will be a better person for it.
Hi, I’m Cortney Herald Walters. I moved to the Boise area a little over 10 years ago. Before being introduced to CrossFit I was into running and hiking, anything cardio. Even though I wasn’t seeing any results, it was right for me at the time. My brother, a crossfit coach kept pushing me for years to get into crossfit. Honestly, every time he mentioned that word I felt anxious and intimidated. I’ve seen the athletes and my mindset was “I can’t do that”.
After much convincing by my brother Justin, he finally got me to join a gym here in Boise. At this time, my husband and I found CFSB (CrossFit South Boise). We were at this gym for a few years until a family tragedy struck and we felt the need to cutback. During this time we stuck with our CrossFit style workouts by creating our own gym in our garage. While my brother was living with us and going through his treatments, he would assist with coaching and programming workouts for me when he could.
In late 2017, I slowly integrated myself back into the gym at Principia Crossfit. It has been a huge change in the best way. I get the coaching I need and the environment is friendly. I will be taking my CrossFit Level One certification soon and Mitch has been so helpful. Mitch truly wants the best for us all and he encourages us to do our best. He’s a coach that looks out for our well being. Everyday that I come in he always asks “how are you doing?” Not every coach does that, and it means the world to me. At Principia CrossFit there’s no “I can’t”, but “I can” and “I will”.
For those of you who want to try CrossFit out, do it. Don’t be afraid like I was because you’re going to miss out on meeting new people and creating new friendships. Also, out of all the workout routines I’ve tried, this is the only workout program I could stick with. The workouts are never the same and I promise you, you won’t get bored. Besides, you’ll have a group of wonderful people to encourage you along even as a beginner. Remember, we’ve all started at the bottom. All it takes is that one step. You’ll have a great coach and a new family supporting you along the way. So what are you waiting for? Take the plunge! We got your back.
